The government has admitted that fake or wrongly obtained SIM cards play a big role in these scams. Therefore, under the Department of Telecommunications, there are preparations to make the process of issuing SIMs more stringent. In the new system, biometric verification can be made mandatory so that every SIM is linked to the real identity. Besides, strict monitoring will also be maintained on the vendors selling SIMs. Telecom companies can also be instructed to share user details with government agencies, if necessary, so that fraudsters can be tracked quickly.

The government has also given some important suggestions for Meta’s messaging platform WhatsApp. These include blocking devices that are repeatedly used for fraud, linking accounts to SIMs and identifying suspicious calls that last for a long time. Apart from this, a proposal has also been made to keep the data of deleted accounts safe for some time so that it can help in the investigation.
