Spam Calls: If you get repeated calls on your phone from unknown numbers asking about loans, KYC updates or bank offers, then you are not alone. A new report by Truecaller has revealed that the threat of spam calls is increasing rapidly in India. In the year 2025, India was among those countries in the world where the maximum number of fake and harassing calls were made. According to the report, India has reached fifth position in the world in terms of spam calls. The most shocking thing is that out of every three unknown calls coming in the country, almost two were found to be related to spam or fraud.
Fake calls are increasing every day
Nowadays, such calls are continuously coming on people’s phones in which they claim to be bank employees, government officials or finance agents. Many times callers ask for personal information by luring people with KYC updates, card blocking or loan offers.
According to the report, most spam calls in India were related to telemarketing and sales. After this comes the number of calls related to financial services and online fraud. These fraud calls are becoming the biggest threat to people’s bank accounts and money.
Now it’s not humans, machines are calling
Truecaller said in its report that now the method of spam calls has completely changed. Where earlier people used to make calls themselves, now thousands of calls are being made simultaneously with the help of automated systems and software. Cyber criminals are now using such systems which make continuous calls from different numbers. This is the reason that after blocking a number, calls start coming from a new number the next day.
India’s position in the world is worrying
According to the report, Indonesia ranks first in terms of spam calls. After this comes Chile, Vietnam and Brazil. India is definitely in fifth place but here 66 percent spam intensity was recorded which is considered quite serious. This simply means that people’s trust in unknown numbers is rapidly decreasing. Now many users have started resorting to call identifying and blocking apps.
How can we avoid such fraud?
Experts say that OTP, bank details or Aadhaar number should not be shared on any unknown call. No real bank or government institution asks for such sensitive information over the phone.
Apart from this, keeping caller ID and spam blocking feature on in the phone can be helpful. Users can also activate DND service through their telecom operator. Complaints about suspicious numbers can also be made on the Sanchar Saathi portal of the government platform TRAI.
The danger may increase further in the future
It is clear from the report that spam and fraud calls have now become not just a nuisance but a big cyber threat. As technology is progressing, the network of fake calls is also becoming smarter. In such a situation, it has become very important to be aware and cautious.
