APK File Cyber Fraud: Nowadays, cases of online fraud are increasing rapidly. Cyber thugs are no longer limited to just calls or fake links, but they are also trying to take over people’s smartphones. APK file is being used the most for this. Many people download such files without thinking and then within a few minutes money starts disappearing from their bank accounts.
Often scammers send APK files through WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS or social media with the promise of any important update, bank KYC, reward or government scheme. As soon as the user installs it, thugs find a way to reach inside the phone.
After all, what is APK file?
APK is actually Android Package File. This is the format for installing apps in Android phones. Just as .exe file is used to install software in a computer, similarly APK file works in Android devices.
These files contain all the data and code required to run the app. Usually, apps downloaded from Google Play Store are found safe after verification, but APK files coming through internet or message can be dangerous. Many times, there is malware or spyware hidden inside these files which is designed to steal personal information of the phone.
Why do scammers use APK files?
Cyber criminals send APK files because through this they can install fake apps directly on the user’s phone. These apps look exactly like real banking apps, government portals or popular services so that people do not get suspicious. Scammers often send such messages that make the user panic or take a quick decision.
Like update KYC immediately, your bank account is about to be closed or download the app to win rewards. As soon as the user installs the APK, the fake app asks for various permissions. People click on Allow without reading and this is where the danger starts.
How does a bank account become empty?
Once a dangerous APK is installed on the phone, it can ask for access to contacts, messages, call logs, notifications, location and even the microphone. After this, this app silently starts sending information like OTP, bank alerts and passwords coming in the phone to the scammers. Many malware can also track screen recording or keyboard typing in real time. As soon as the fraudsters get the banking details and OTP, they transfer money from the account. Many people do not even know until the message about reduced bank balance comes.
This is how you can avoid APK Scam
One should not immediately click on any unknown link or file. If you are being asked to download any app from outside the Play Store, then first check its authenticity. While installing an app on the phone, it is very important to read the permissions asked for carefully. Be cautious if any simple app needs access to SMS, calls or banking notifications. Apart from this, it is considered safe to always keep antivirus and security updates on in the mobile.
New cyber threat is increasing rapidly
With the increase in digital payments and online banking, APK Scam is also spreading rapidly. Cyber criminals are now taking advantage of people’s small carelessness and stealing both their data and money. In such a situation, it is very important to be cautious before downloading any file because one wrong click can put your entire bank account at risk.
