If there is a strange smell, burning smell or chemical smell while turning on the AC, then it can be a sign of danger. Refrigerant gas starts leaking in many old ACs which can cause respiratory problems. Being in contact with such gas for a long time can be harmful to health. Therefore, before purchasing, run the AC for at least 15-20 minutes and check it.

The biggest danger in old ACs is due to bad wiring. Sometimes the wires are cut or the plug appears burnt. In such a situation, the risk of short circuit and fire increases. If the wiring behind the AC looks very old or connected with tape, then it would be better to stay away from such models.
