CNAP Vs Truecaller: A big change has started in India regarding caller identification. After the introduction of TRAI’s new initiative CNAP (Caller Name Presentation), the question has started arising whether the need for popular apps like Truecaller will end now. However, the reality is a little different and interesting.
What is CNAP and how does it work?
CNAP i.e. Caller Name Presentation is a new system of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Through this, the mobile user can see the name of the caller on incoming calls without downloading any app and without any subscription.
This name is taken from the KYC-based official record maintained by the telecom companies which is submitted through the documents while getting the SIM. That is, when a call is received, the network itself shows the registered name associated with the number on the screen.
CNAP is currently being implemented in a phased manner on 4G and 5G networks. Later there are plans to bring it on the old network also. Its biggest feature is that it does not require internet connection or any third-party app.
TRAI has also given the option that users who do not want to show their names can opt out of it through the CLIR (Calling Line Identification Restriction) setting.
What is the purpose of bringing CNAP?
The main objective of CNAP is to provide a standard and reliable caller ID system that works directly at the network level. This can reduce problems related to fake identity, wrong name and unknown calls.
Telecom companies and device makers have also been asked to ensure timely device support. It is expected that this system will be available on a large scale by the beginning of 2026.
What is Truecaller and why is it so popular?
Truecaller is a well-known caller ID and spam detection app that is available on both Android and iOS. Its identification is not limited to just showing the name of the caller.
Truecaller’s database is based on information and real-time patterns from the user community. This is why it can show calls with tags like spam, fraud, business or personal.
Apart from this, features like call blocking, spam alert, business directory, reason for call, logo badge and even voicemail are also available in Truecaller. However, for this it is necessary to install the app and register with the mobile number.
What is the real difference between CNAP and Truecaller?
The biggest difference between CNAP and Truecaller is the source of data. CNAP relies on official and KYC-verified records of the telecom operator while Truecaller builds identities from information shared by users and community data.
CNAP is a network-level facility that works without internet and apps. Truecaller is a feature-rich app that needs to be installed and updated from time to time. Both are different in terms of functionality also. CNAP is limited to showing registered names only while Truecaller offers spam blocking, fraud alerts and additional information related to calls.
Which is better for you?
The purpose of both systems is to tell the user who is calling, but the method is different. CNAP is better for those who prioritize privacy and just want to see the official name without the app.
Truecaller is beneficial for those users who are troubled by spam calls and are comfortable giving necessary permissions to the app in exchange for advanced features.
Ultimately, it entirely depends on your need and preference whether you choose the government network-based CNAP or the feature-packed Truecaller.
