Loneliness is increasing among teenagers and they are using AI chatbots for everything from getting advice to emotional support. This is a shocking revelation in a recent study. According to the study, chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Gemini are no longer a tool for teenagers to do homework. Gradually they are coming into the position of digital companions and teenagers are becoming dependent on them to get emotional support.
Study conducted on more than 5,000 teenagers
The UK Youth Charity conducted a survey on more than 5,000 teenagers aged 11 to 18 years. It was found that 2 out of every 5 teenagers are using AI chatbots to get advice, company or support. With increasing age, teenagers’ dependence on them is increasing. More than 50 percent of 18-year-old teenagers said that they depend on AI chatbots for guidance. The survey also revealed that boys are using these chatbots more than girls.
Teenagers are taking emotional support from machines
The researcher found that teenagers are not using chatbots only for practical information and homework. About 14 percent of those surveyed admitted that they sought help from a chatbot regarding friendship. Similarly, 11 percent used chatbots because of mental health concerns and 12 percent because they needed someone to talk. More than half of the teenagers who participated in the survey admitted that they are using chatbots to get advice on everything from daily life problems to stress etc. The survey revealed that teenagers are using AI chatbots to overcome their loneliness, but the American Psychological Association has warned children and teenagers that AI chatbots can make them lonelier.
