Hundreds of messages come on our phones every day. Sometimes from a bank, sometimes from an app, sometimes from an offer, but many times fake links or fraudulent numbers are also included in these messages, due to which people become victims of fraud, but from now on, companies will have to pre-register the variable fields like link, app download URL, or call back number present in every SMS template.

If you understand in simple language, before sending SMS, companies will have to tell which link or number will come in that message and why. It has often been seen that people are cheated by inserting fake links in many messages coming on mobile. These links appear genuine, but on clicking, serious problems like theft of bank details, data hacking or cyber fraud arise. TRAI’s investigation repeatedly found that fraudsters took advantage of this flexibility and placed fake links in the name of real companies, due to which common people were easily trapped.
This will change due to new rules
Under the new rule, now while creating the SMS template, companies will tell which link will come in the message and what is its purpose. All old templates will have to be updated within 60 days, otherwise such messages will not be sent. With this, mobile networks will be able to immediately identify whether the link inserted in the message is genuine or not and will also be able to stop it if necessary.
Common people will benefit
Fraudulent messages will reduce on a large scale, trust in messages from banks or government services will increase and phishing activities on mobiles will be controlled to a great extent. This rule is an important step towards making digital messaging secure. In view of the ever increasing cases of cyber fraud on mobile, this system was very important for the safety of the people. Now every link and number will be cross verified in advance, which will make the messages more reliable and secure. The government believes that this decision will bring relief to mobile users and will make digital communication more secure and transparent.
