Headphones: A recent lab test has raised concerns about headphones from popular audio brands. According to the report, such chemicals have been found in models of well-known brands like Bose, Samsung and Sennheiser which are considered potentially harmful to health. A total of 81 different headphone models were tested and substances associated with risk were found in every sample.
Which materials were tested?
The trial was conducted under an initiative called ToxFree LIFE for All, which involves several civil society organizations in Central Europe. Researchers purchased both over-ear and in-ear headphones and analyzed the plastic and synthetic parts that come in direct contact with the skin. During the investigation, maximum attention was paid to the chemicals used in plastic because these parts remain stuck to the ears and skin for a long time.
Presence of bisphenol A and other chemicals
It was reported in the report that chemicals of bisphenol group were found in most of the samples. In particular, BPA was found in about 98 percent of the samples while bisphenol S was also present in large numbers. Both of these are considered endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with the hormonal system of the body.
Apart from this, phthalates, chlorinated paraffin and some flame retardants were also found. In scientific studies, these chemicals have been linked to reproductive problems, effects on the liver and kidneys and a possible risk of cancer.
Risk may increase with prolonged use
Although in most cases the amount of chemicals was found to be low, experts have warned that daily and prolonged use may increase the risk. Nowadays people wear headphones for many hours whether while working in office, traveling or while exercising in the gym. In conditions of heat and sweat, it may become easier for chemicals from plastic to reach the skin.
Experts say that frequent contact and simultaneous exposure to multiple products can have long-term effects. This is called the cocktail effect where chemicals from different sources combine to increase the risk.
Demand for transparency and strict rules
Following this investigation, health activists have stressed the need for greater transparency in the consumer electronics industry. He believes that clear information about the chemical components of products that come in direct contact with the body should be given.
There is a demand to make strict rules on the use of chemicals that affect the endocrine system, especially keeping in mind children and adolescents. At present, there has been no official response to this report from the concerned companies.
