Artificial Intelligence: Artificial Intelligence i.e. AI is a technology whose objective is to give machines the ability to think, understand, make decisions and learn like humans. But machines do not learn from birth like humans do. They are taught with the help of data, examples and programming. This process is called AI Training.
It is important to train AI because if the machine has to understand language, recognize a picture, compose a song, answer a question or recognize a human being’s voice, then for this it will need a huge amount of information. The more and better data we get, the more intelligent AI will become.
Start of AI Training
The first and most important step in training AI is to collect data. There are several types of this data:
Text: Books, Articles, Websites, Chats
Image: photo, video frames
Audio: voices, songs, podcasts
User Behavior: What do people search, what do they see, how do they scroll.
This data is fed into the AI model, which the machine gradually understands as a pattern. For example, if AI has to be taught to recognize a photo of a dog, it has to be shown pictures of millions of dogs. With each photo it is told that there is a dog in it, what breed it is, what is its size. Gradually AI learns which features identify the dog – shape of ears, nose, eyes, body shape etc.
How does AI learn?
AI does not get a brain like humans, rather it is given algorithms and neural networks. These networks are inspired by the neurons of our brain. There are many layers in these and each layer understands the data in a new way.
The learning process of AI occurs in three major ways:
-
Supervised Learning
In this, data is given to AI with correct answers. Like this picture is of a cat, this is of a man. AI learns from these examples.
Unsupervised Learning
Here AI gets unlabeled data and has to find patterns on its own. Example: Which type of users buy more which products?
Reinforcement Learning (Reward-Based Learning)
In this, AI is given points or penalty like a game. If the right decision is taken then the score increases, if the wrong decision is taken then it decreases. This is how AI keeps getting better. For example, a robot learning to walk, a self-driving car understanding the road, etc.
How much power do machines need for training?
Training AI is a very heavy process. It requires a lot of computing power. Large GPU and TPU clusters, supercomputer-like server machines, millions of data points, weeks or months of training. The bigger the model, the bigger the expense. It takes millions of dollars to train large AI models. Therefore, they are usually made by big tech companies only.
What happens after the training is over?
Once AI is trained, it is deployed. That means, it is made available on the internet so that people can use it. Like ChatGPT understanding your question and answering it, Google Maps estimating traffic, Instagram showing reels of your choice. Even after training, AI does not stop learning. From time to time it is updated with new data so that it can understand the latest things.
Can AI become a threat to humans?
This question is the most discussed today. AI is growing rapidly and its capabilities are increasing every month. This can create many types of dangers.
threat of job loss
The smarter AI becomes, the more it will start doing many tasks on its own.
- content writing
- Photo/Video Editing
- customer support
- accounting
- translation
- data entry
AI is already doing many simple tasks in place of humans. In the coming time, some jobs may disappear completely.
Danger of spreading wrong information
AI can very easily create a fake voice or video of someone. Deepfake videos, AI-generated fake news, fake voice of a leader or celebrity. If it is misused, confusion, fear and harm can increase in the society.
Privacy and data threats
AI requires a lot of data to train. Many times it is not known where this data comes from. People do not know which of their information is going to AI. If this data goes into wrong hands then the danger increases further.
Machines beyond human control
This is the biggest fear of AI. If an AI becomes so powerful that it starts taking decisions on its own and does not follow orders from humans, then it can prove dangerous. Although no such AI exists yet, experts are constantly warning about its risks.
Can AI become a big threat to humanity?
If AI is developed without rules and precautions then there is danger in it. But with the right rules, monitoring and responsible development, AI can also be very beneficial for humans. AI can make our lives easier, better treatment, smarter education, faster research, improvement in life quality, information from all over the world instantly available. That means AI is a tool. It depends on in which direction humans use it, for good or evil.
The process of training AI is long and complex, requiring big data, powerful computers and advanced algorithms. This technology is advancing rapidly and will become more deeply integrated into our lives in the future. Although there are risks associated with it, AI can be kept safe with the right laws, transparency and human control. Whether AI will become a threat or a help to humans in the future will entirely depend on how we develop it today.
