- This eco-friendly, soil-soluble technology will transform the electronics of the future.
Electricity from Air Humidity: Amidst the increasing e-waste and pollution across the world, scientists have developed a new technology that can generate electricity from the moisture present in the air. The special thing is that this device is completely biodegradable and such common substances have been used in making it which are also used in food and drink.
This research has been done jointly by scientists from Queen Mary University of London, University of Warwick, Imperial College London and Universitas Mercatorum. This research has been published in Nano Energy Journal.
What is this new technology?
This technology is called Moisture-Electric Generator i.e. MEG. While common electronic devices get damaged due to moisture, this new system makes moisture its strength. The device has been made from cheap and safe ingredients like gelatin, common salt and activated carbon. The process of making it is also very easy and water based, due to which the production cost can be reduced significantly.
How is electricity made?
This device absorbs moisture present in the air or skin. When the mixture of gelatin and salt dries, a special three-layered structure is formed inside it. After this, as soon as it comes in contact with moisture again, the ions present inside become active and start moving. Electricity is continuously generated through this process. According to scientists, a small unit of this can generate about 1 volt electricity continuously for more than 30 days.
Can operate small appliances
Researchers created a big system by connecting many units. This setup produced about 90 volts of electricity, which was enough to run small electronic devices and LED light strings. It is clear from this that in future this technology can become an alternative to batteries for small gadgets and sensor devices.
Can also detect breath and body moisture
This technology is not limited to generating electricity only. Scientists found that this device can also work as a sensor. Because its power output varies with humidity levels, it can detect even very mild moisture from the human body. During research, scientists used it to monitor breathing and measure the moisture released while speaking. In future, it can be used in health monitoring devices, wearable technology and touchless sensor systems.
safe for the environment too
The biggest feature of this device is its environmental friendliness. Normal electronic products contain plastic, toxic chemicals and heavy metals, but MEG has been designed in such a way that it can easily dissolve in the soil after use. It can be destroyed naturally within a few weeks or its substances can be reused by dissolving it in water. This is the reason why scientists are considering it as a big step towards circular electronics.
This discovery may change future electronics
Researchers believe that in the coming times, the dependence on rare and environmentally harmful substances to make electronic devices may reduce. This new discovery shows that simple, cheap and sustainable materials can be used to create high-performance technology that works in harmony with nature.
