New Battery Technology: The biggest concerns regarding today’s batteries are their safety and cost. Many times these batteries overheat and catch fire; also, expensive and environmentally harmful materials are used in making them. To solve this problem, scientists at Florida State University have developed a new type of zinc-ion battery which works on water-based technology and is considered safer.
Strong performance even after charging 900 times
According to the report of Interesting Engineering, the most special thing about this new battery is that it almost retains its capacity even after being charged rapidly about 900 times. Normally batteries become weak after repeated charging but this new technology appears capable of providing stable performance for a long time.
Better alternative to lithium-ion batteries
Nowadays, Lithium-ion battery is most commonly used but there is a risk of overheating and fire associated with it. This is why efforts to find safe and environmentally friendly alternatives have intensified across the world.
Solution to dendrite problem
Zinc-ion batteries were considered a good option earlier also but they faced a problem called “dendrite”. During charging, needle-like metal structures start forming inside the battery which ultimately short circuit the battery and damage it.
To solve this challenge, scientists have prepared a special design in which the manganese dioxide electrode is made inside the battery itself. With this, a water-based hydrogel has been used which has been strengthened with Kevlar fiber. This is the same strong material that is used in bulletproof jackets.
Strong and safe design
This battery has been designed in such a way that it acts like a protective layer inside. It not only keeps the electrolyte stable but also prevents the growth of dangerous metal structures, thereby reducing the risk of short circuit. The processes of making old-fashioned batteries are quite complex and expensive, in which chemical paste is prepared, it is applied on metal and then dried. But in this new technology the entire process is based on water, which can make the battery easier and cheaper to prepare.
Better option for large scale energy storage
However, this battery is currently not suitable for light devices like smartphones because zinc batteries are a bit heavy. But where weight does not matter much, such as in large energy storage systems or home backup, this technology can prove to be very useful.
